Functionality and Use

How can the function of an object contextualize its meaning?
Objects tell narratives, perform in ceremonies, and mark periods of change within Indigenous art due to intrinsic or extrinsic demands. Focusing on an object’s function through the lens of its life outside of its visual appearance can further highlight the thoughtful craftsmanship of Indigenous artists. Indigenous art has both aesthetic and utilitarian functions, which often rely on one another to give the object its complete meaning. In addition to ceramics, this section introduces mixed media objects tied to ritual, ceremonial, and cultural practices in Southwestern Indigenous communities. These objects are accompanied by narratives, photographs, and videos which bring these images into a living space, celebrating their original context. Ranging from uses in ceremonies, personal life, and tourism markets, these objects encompass the multi-faceted nature of their functions.
